Summer Bucket List

Summer is the best time of year regardless, but having a summer bucket list full of crazy adventurous things can make your summer of 2013 that much better!
So what’s on your bucket list? Here are some things on mine!
·         Have a paint war
What could be more fun that having a huge paint war with all your friends? Yes it’s messy and a perfect opportunity for a fun photo op! Paint war’s are easy and make great memories. All you need is lots of paint, some friends, and a big field!

·         Road trip
Now I know this one isn’t very original, but it seems that every summer I say I’m going to do a road trip, and it never happens. That’s why road trip is on my bucket list! Grad the girls, a car, and an awesome playlist and just drive until we find somewhere sweet to stay.

·         Cliff Diving

This one is a given. New Brunswick has tons of hidden cliffs and waterfalls perfect for diving in. One tip, make sure the water’s deep enough to dive! This could be super fun on one of those extremely hot summer days.

Now these are a few of the many items on my summer bucket list, but I feel that their fun and general enough to be on anyone’s bucket list! Don’t forget about the pool parties, beach days, shopping trips, and all of that. Also, remember not to limit your bucket list. What’s the big deal if you don’t get them all crossed off? There’s always next summer! Hope I inspired you to add a few adventures into your summer!

Anti-Bullying

We are all well aware that bullying is a major problem in society. Bullying happens not only at school, but at home and online. People are dying and something needs to be done about this social issue.

My old dance teacher, Justin Saulnier, choreographed a dance called PRIDE with the dancers at Step In Time Dance School. It’s a beautiful dance done by an amazing choreographer and gorgeous dancers.

This dance is done to Ellen Degeneres’s speech on bullying. It is an extremely powerful dance, raising awareness to the bullying problems in our world today.

I would definitely recommend you watch it, share it on twitter, facebook, and show it to everyone you know! Follow the link below, you won’t regret it!

My Media Studies Journey

Throughout my semester taking Media Studies, I’ve learned a lot.

First of all, my eyes were opened to how the media can manipulate society into having false perceptions on beauty, and life. Also the media manipulates us into buying products by their advertisements.

I also learned a lot about how the media has developed over the years, and become more effective. Also how the media is changing the world and the way we all think.

In media studies I also learned a lot about social networking. It’s something we all do, without giving it much thought. Facebook, twitter, instagram and others are all amusing pass times, but if people aren’t smart then they can have bad effects on their future. People need to think about what they post because once it’s out there, it can always come back to haunt you.

I learned a lot in Media Studies and will think about it in the future. It was useful information and I think that most people should know this.

Censorship on Facebook

So, we all have that one (or more) facebook friends that post pictures and statuses that are completely ridiculous, or inappropriate. It’s really important to censor and think about what you’re putting on a social media network, because once it’s seen it’s always out there.

Before I post a picture on facebook, I look at it obviously to make sure I don’t look stupid, or that there isn’t anything that would offend anyone. Also I check for spelling mistakes because we all have those annoying facebook friends who always correct spelling errors. I honestly don’t do very many status updates, but when I do I make sure that it’s nothing too personal and something I don’t mind the whole world knowing (which is why I don’t end up updating my status very often).

People really need to censor what they put out there. Even if you delete it, someone may screen shot it before you get a chance to delete it and it can be sent to anyone and still seen. It’s super important to think about what is being posted on the internet, with your name on it.

How Social Media Changes The Way We Interact

Although social media is great, it helps us stay in touch with those friends and family who live far away, this constant way of socializing takes little effort and is not always a positive thing.

Talking to someone on facebook or twitter is super convenient and is really making us lazy. Why would we drive down to our friend’s house to see them when we can just send them a message on facebook? People are starting to forget about face to face interactions. Lots of relationships are not only starting online, but ending online. It seems like people talk to their friends more on social networking sites and texting than in real life.

Aside from the loss of face to face interaction people are becoming addicted to social networking. I know when I get home from school the first thing I do is check facebook, twitter, and instagram. This is totally subconscious and looking at how much time I waste on these sites is ridiculous, and I know there are people out there way more obsessed than I am.

Social Media is changing the way we interact with each other and our relationships. Since social media is so easy and takes minimal effort that’s what people seem to be choosing. Personally, I prefer face to face interaction. I still text and facebook message people but I think it’s important to see people and interact with them in person.

Prom Hair

Although prom may seem far away, it's really not.. there’s less than 30 days until prom!

Most of us have already got the dress, shoes, and date, but who's started to think about the hair?! Well I just realized that the clock is ticking, and it’s time to decide on some prom hair styles!

For all of you girls like me who are still undecided, I hope I can help you out!

So first for those with beautiful long hair, you're probably more likely to want it down and curly. This Carrie Underwood look is perfect for those of you with long hair and a strapless dress. You can never go wrong with pretty feminine curls.

This next look is classic and elegant. A low chignon is simple and will look great with any dress. This is perfect for anyone with straight to wavy hair that just won’t hold curls.

Now for those of you with naturally curly hair I would recommend a Taylor Swift in spired hair style. This is elegant and makes your curls look great!

I hope this helped those of you scrambling to find a hair style for prom!

Social Networking and Privacy

Who doesn’t love wasting time on facebook? Well most people do. There’s nothing wrong with social networking, but you do have to be careful with your privacy.

There are so many creepers out there, I know from firsthand experience, and if you don’t have enough privacy on your facebook account they can find you and look at all your pictures. Who wants creepy old men going through all their photos? ew… not me!

The good thing about most social networking sites is that there are privacy options. You can protect your photos, statuses, and information from strangers, but the problem is some people aren’t aware of these settings and other’s just say they don’t care who sees their postings.

People should care about creepers finding out their name, hometown, how they look, what they like. Social networking makes stalking so much easier. People need to be smart with their privacy settings on social networking sites. As long as people are smart and have privacy on their accounts social networking can be a safe thing.

Spring and Summer Styles

With spring having sprung and summer soon on the way, it’s time for to dig out those shorts and sandals you’ve been missing.

Whether you’re looking for outfit ideas, wanting to add to your shopping list, or just are into fashion, this post is great for you!

I’ve put together a few spring/summer outfits that are perfect for any casual event.

WARNING:  My fashion taste can be a little girly, so I’m sorry if this isn’t for you.

This first outfit consists of:

-         Pale pink shorts from Americain Eagle

-         A vintage prelum shirt I’m totally in love with. (purchased from a thrift store)

This outfit is perfect for a sunny spring or summer day. Colored shorts are always fun, plus this light pink color makes your legs look even more tanned! Prelum shirts are very in right now and are very flattering and floral patterns are cute and summery! You could wear this casually, or dress it up by adding some cute shoes and accessories. Colored shorts and a prelum shirt should be staples in your spring/summer wardrobe.

For this next outfit I recycled my pink shirt and added a white chiffon shirt, braided belt, pearl breacelet, and some aviator sunglasses.

This outfit is great because with a white top you can wear any colored shorts! Plus, white will bring out your tan this summer. Aviator sunglasses are classic and this pair has a floral pattern down the arms.

All pieces in this outfit are practical and can be used with many other combinations. For example, you can just wear a tank top and throw a jean jacket on over top for the chillier days.

Who doesn’t love wearing skirts and dresses on nice hot days?! I know I sure do! For this next outfit I just wore a thick strapped white tank top with detailing on the straps, a patterned skirt and the jean jacket on top is optional, depending on the weather.

So as you can see, with the purchase of just a few items you can update your Spring and Summer wardrobe! Happy Shopping :)

Dead Tone

Our Media Studies class has been working on a class video. The video is basically a parody of “The Walking Dead”. Instead of having Walkers, we have texters.

A short summary of the story:

There’s a mass text virus going around the school that turns people into zombies when they read it. A group of friends is trying to run away from these zombies and not get turned.

We’ve put a lot of work and time into this video already and it’s only just started getting filmed, so it should be pretty good!

One way we can probably all relate to this video is that we’ve all either ran into or been that person with their eyes glued to their phone while walking through the halls. People can be obsessed with their phones and act a little zombieish so it’s fun to do a parody sowing that.

Spring Fever

There are so many reasons to love spring!

One great reason is this sun! I'm so happy that all the snow is melted and it's warming up outside. It's a great feeling when you can take a long drive on an old back road with the windows down and a beautiful sunset!

You know that awesome feeling you get when you can pack away your winter coat and start wearing dresses again, who wouldn't love that!?

Ever heard the word heliophilia? It means desire to stay in the sun; love of sunlight. That's me! I also

The fact that spring is here just means were that much closer to summer, and who doesn't love summer?! Spring just gets me excited for the late night bonfires, road trips, beach days, and pool parties on the way!

How Television and Film Potray the Ordinary Things We Accept In Our Daily World

How do television, film, and video portray the ordinary things we accept in our daily world? Well first of all, television and film are filled with stereotypes. So many movies and shows have the pretty popular cheerleader, who is super stupid. There’s usually the cute jock that all the girls want, then the unpopular and nerdy kids who no one takes a second look at.

Although shows and movies portray these stereotypes, not everything always ends up the way you’d expect. Take “A Cinderella Story” for example, the popular boy is actually a sweetheart, and falls for the nerdy girl. The stereotypes happen in life and we do accept them, because that’s life, but the outcome can come out different, and many television and film are showing that there’s more to a person than their stereotype.

Another way television and film can stereotype people is with families. Lots of shows have a house with the kids, mom, and dad. But then there are shows like “Modern Family” that display many different types of families in a comical way. You have the same sex marriage, a divorced family, and just an average family. Have you ever seen the movie “Yours, Mine, and Ours”? That portrays blended families.

I agree that there are lots of stereotypes in television and film, but there are also lots of shows and movies that aren’t stereotypical.

Our Role as Television Consumers

Our role as television consumers, to the media, is to fall for their advertisements. That commercial for the mascara that will make your eyelashes look miles long? We should fall for it. Our role as television consumers and users should be to question what we see.

Back to the mascara thing, every time I try new mascara that I’ve seen on TV, I’m disappointed with the results. My lashes don’t look nearly as long and thick as the girl from TV. That’s because I don’t wear fake eyelashes. Advertisements manipulate us into thinking we’ll look the same way. Really, we just need to question what we’re seeing.
This doesn’t just happen with mascara commercials. It can be with product placements on shows, or commercials for just about anything. When were watching TV it is our job to decide for ourselves whether we agree or disagree with what we’re seeing. People need to make their own opinions on products and subjects, not just believe all that they see.
The role of a television consumer/user, is really just to think about what their watching and form their own opinions.

Disney's Message

Apparently, some people find the female characters from Disney movies stereotypical. I have to disagree. The only way I find Disney, in general, remotely stereotypical is the appearance of the female characters. All the princesses and main females always have a slim, fit body, perfect make-up, and hair. After a fight scene not a single hair is out of place. Also, the good girl/princess is always beautiful. This does portray an image for young girls and boys about beauty, giving them the impression that being beautiful is being thin and flawless looking.

Despite the physical stereotypes about women, Disney portrays various personality types throughout their wide range of films. Mulan, for example, addresses many sexist and cultural issues. It shows that women can do anything a man can do. Brave has a similar message, how women can be strong. There’s also the damsel in distress movies like Rapunzel, but even then Disney movies still have good underlying, encouraging messages.

If you think about all the Disney movies you have ever seen, no two characters are alike. How can Disney in general be stereotypical towards genders?

Not all female characters are sweet and naïve, waiting their prince. Tinker Bell is not so sweet, she’s got lots of sassy comments; Cruella De Vil and Ursula are some of the best known villains, along with Scar from the lion king, and Jafar from Aladdin.

There’s the male chef in “The Little Mermaid” for example. This shows not only girls can enjoy cooking. Sure there are still Princes and happily ever after, but if you look at the personalities of the characters, they all really portray different strengths and weaknesses for both genders.

Disney movies as a whole are not stereotypical. They display a wide range of personalities, strengths, and weaknesses for both genders. Though Disney may portray a perception of beauty, their films also encouraging messages and good themes for people of any age.

News paper art

This week I’m going to show you a perfect rainy day craft.

What you’ll need:

·         A Canvas (just one from the dollar store)

·         Newspaper

·         Glue

·         Letter Stencils

·         Paint

The first thing you’ll want to do is glue newspaper onto your canvas, Make sure to cover it completely. I made sure there weren’t any pictures on mine, just words (it looks better).

Once the glue is dry, choose any and however many words you would like on your canvas. Shorter words work better. I chose Dance, Laugh, Dream, and Believe.

Take your letter stencils and place them on the canvas where you would like your word to be. You might want to tape them on so that they don’t move around. Once you have the stencils laid out in an order you like, paint over top of the newspaper.

When the paint is dry you can remove the stencils and...

Taaa daa!

Now you have a cute decoration for your bedroom

You don't have to stick to newspaper, you could use picture, sheets of music, or whatever else you'd like. just Have Fun with is and Be Creative!

Here's the one I made!

A Trip To The Moon

A trip to the moon is a black and white movie from 1902. This was made before anyone had ever been to the moon. I honestly found it very boring, for a few reasons. There was no color and all there was for sound was music. I guess it just didn’t interest me. I found it a little strange, for example the fact that the moon has a face and the ship crashes into its eye. But considering they hadn’t seen the moon at that point in time it’s understandable.

One thing that is kind of cool about “A Trip To The Moon” is that TV shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy have made references to it. Also bands have made music videos about it, so it is a pretty popular video.
There are so many jokes and references to videos and things from the past that we don’t even catch when watching television shows. Even though this video was boring it’s good to watch because now we can understand the references.

Something old, something new

One thing I love doing is taking something old and turning it into something new! This way, you still get that antiquey look, but can make it your own.

I’ll let you in on my tricks on how to turn an old window/ mirror into a jewellery holder.
Obviously, you’ll need to find an old window or mirror. Luckily Sussex has tons of old barns you’re guaranteed to find something antiquey looking!
First thing you’ll need to do is clean up. If your frame has been sitting in a barn for years you’ll probably need to fix it up Bust out the glass (just be careful) and if it needs to be done, sand it down and touch up on the paint.

Once you have your frame all cleaned the fun can begin! There are tons of different options on how to hang your jewellery so be creative. I used C-hooks, which can be purchased at the dollar store, to necklaces. If you want to hang earrings chicken wire worked really well. For a more feminine look you could use lace. There are so many options so be crafty!

Hope you enjoyed a cute way to turn something old into something new!

Here's the jewlery holder I made!

The Bronswik Affair

The Bronswik affair is a mocumentary created to make us see how much television advertisements affect society.

Now the documentary goes a little extreme, when people but cart fulls of items they don't need , just because they saw them on a commercial. The reasoning for these weird shopping behaviours was because Bronswik television sets had a chip that sent certain waves and made you think you needed products you don't actually need. (There's a big scientific explanation on how the chip works but that's my short one).

Obviously this whole idea sounds ridiculous , right? But while watching the mocumentary I started to second guess myself and wonder if it was true. That just shows how gullible we can be to television and advertisements.

We tend to subconsciously believe what we see and hear, and the Bronswik Affair just demonstrates that.

So I'm thinking of posting a pinterest craft each Thursday and calling it "Somthing Pinned". Pinterest is crazy addictive and my room is becoming crowded with crafts, so I thought I'd share some ideas.

This little craft is super easy and cute, plus you can personalize it!

What you'll need
·         A metal coat hanger
·         Some sort of string (Pipe cleaners work well)
·         If using string a glue gun

First things first, you'll need to unravel the coat hanger and straighten it out.

Next, you need to bend the coat hanger to form a small word (LOVE works really well). You'll need to make the word using cursive writing that way it's connected.

Now comes the fun part...

If you want to use pipe cleaners you'll need quite a few. Take a pipe cleaner and begin to wrap it around the metal, covering the entire thing.

Pinned ImageYou can also use any sort of string. I used hemp because I wanted somthing more simpler, but you can be creative and have some fun with it.

Like I said, it's simple and cute, and only takes about 10 minutes! Hope you enjoyed!

Question What You Read

This week in Media studies we had to answer a lot of questions on different types of media. The purpose of these questions was to make us think about what were reading and watching, and to question it (something we don’t often do).

Take magazine articles for example; they’re most often written by one author. This individual may have an opinion on the subject and most times it comes through in the writing. But who really thinks to question what their reading? I know most times I don’t.

News articles aren’t the only form of media that can give a bias opinion on subjects. It happens in television too.

One thing I never really noticed was all the product placements. TV shows are paid by companies to advertise their products and it happens all the time, it can be hard to notice. In just 11 episodes of The Amazing Race, there were 161 product placements... that’s a lot! Their getting so much many from advertising, no wonder the show has stuck around for 20 seasons!

The majority of people don’t question what they read or see in the media. It’s good to question things so that you can have your own opinion on things, not someone else’s.
